The 49 players named in the Women’s Sevens Training squad, from which the New Zealand team will be selected are finding how committed they will have to be to make the team.
As well as training and playing for their club sides they are required to do 3 Conditioning Sessions each week, which involves;
|
Session 1 :Five 3 minute runs going as fast as possible |
|
Session 2 :Eight 30 second sprints |
|
Session 3 :Forty Eight 30 metre sprints |
Twenty nine of the squad have just returned from a two day training camp at the army base at Waiouru which included doing the army assault course twice, catch and pass session involving medicine balls and rugby balls for strength and conditioning, gym session involving the High Performance Sport NZ Programme, Team training and contact games.
The players also had sessions on diet, recovery and with NZRU physio and mentalist.
A second camp is planned for July including the 19 players who weren’t at this camp.
There is no doubt when the team of twelve is selected, it will be the best prepared ever women’s rugby team to represent New Zealand and will include a number of players who haven’t played in the Black Ferns previously.
